It encourages clients to understand their view of events so as to have the insight to why they act and feel in the ways that they do. This knowledge can then be used to creatively change the client's experience and bring more positive results to their life, using their inner resources and abilities so they learn to manage their emotional states. CBT offers lasting results for therapy and coaching, by emphasizing the present moment, by examining currently-held attitudes, painful emotions, and behaviours that cause problems, discomfort, and sabotage a fuller experience of life. In other words, it shows the client how to overcome the past by focusing on and changing the present. It also helps clients to find alternative ways of putting into practice healthy and realistic alternatives to the way they behave, think and feel.
A Cognitive Behavioural Therapist has established techniques for helping you to resolve the issues that have been causing you discomfort in your life. The therapist will work closely with you, guiding you to uncover your individual set of beliefs (attitudes, expectations and personal rules) that frequently lead to emotional distress. The therapist will then use a selection of methods to help you put together healthier beliefs with more balanced, realistic and helpful results. The ultimate aim is to assist you in developing a new philosophy and approach to living that can increase your enjoyment of life and fulfillment of your goals and dreams.
This therapy is also taught in such a way that you, the client, can take the basic method and apply it and develop it yourself, in your day to day life.
The lasting results of CBT include a high level of self acceptance, high tolerance to the frustrations in life, the ability to take well calculated risk by balancing your short and long term interests. You will learn to accept uncertainty and change and develop a high degree of emotional responsibility, by acting and thinking flexibly, with a sense of enlightened self interest.
